Day 5
Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most. ~`Abraham Lincoln
Discerning The Essence Of Focus
Not all of us must put our lives on the line like Lincoln did for the sake of pursuing our purpose and priorities, but assessing priorities is an important step toward finding balance. Priorities determine how you allocate your time, efforts, money and resources based on your values and what you consider important.
It is important to differentiate between priorities and values. A priority would be what you give precedence to in terms of time, and it changes like money, time, and health.
A value is a core principle that does not change and is an intrinsic driver of behavior like honesty, kindness, and integrity.
Values serve as the foundation of priorities, helping to shape your character and influence decision-making. Aligning your priorities with your values ensures harmony between what you deem important and your core principles, so you avoid the friction of misalignment.
Life is a series of trade-offs and how we assess the trade is through prioritization and making choices. Do I eat the cookie and satisfy the immediate gratification, or do I refuse the cookie in favor of a pursuing a healthy life? A good rule is to assess regularly whether your choices serve your long-term aspirations and reflect your values. This will ensure that you are upholding values true to your convictions.
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Thoughts To Reflect On
What truly matters to me in life?
What are my core values and beliefs?
How can I align my priorities with my long-term goals?
